Vaginal Health Care in Austin, TX

Vaginal symptoms can be uncomfortable, frustrating and hard to talk about. At Compass Women’s Health, you can describe what you are experiencing without feeling rushed, and leave with a clear plan.

What Are Common Vaginal Health Concerns?

Common concerns include changes in discharge, itching, burning, irritation, odor, dryness and pain during sex. These symptoms can have many causes, including bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections, sexually transmitted infections, skin conditions, hormonal changes and reactions to products such as soaps or detergents.

Because different causes can feel similar, an evaluation helps make sure you get the right treatment.

Symptoms Worth Discussing
  • Discharge that has changed in color, amount or odor
  • Itching, burning or irritation
  • Dryness or discomfort
  • Pain or bleeding during or after sex
  • Symptoms that keep coming back

When Should You See a Gynecologist for Vaginal Symptoms?

Consider an appointment if you

  • Have symptoms for the first time
  • Have symptoms that return after treatment
  • Are not sure what is causing your symptoms
  • Have pain during sex
  • Notice sores, bumps or skin changes
  • Have bleeding that is not part of your period
  • Have symptoms along with fever or pelvic pain
  • Are pregnant and have new symptoms
  • Have dryness that affects comfort or intimacy
  • Have concerns you have not felt able to raise before

If you have fever with pelvic pain, or severe pain, seek prompt medical care.

Why Self-Treatment Is Not Always the Answer

Many people assume their symptoms are a yeast infection, but bacterial vaginosis and other conditions can feel similar and need different treatment. Using the wrong over-the-counter product can delay relief. If you have treated yourself without improvement, or symptoms keep returning, an evaluation can help.

Dryness and Discomfort

Vaginal dryness can happen at any age and may be related to hormonal changes, breastfeeding, certain medications or birth control, and stress. After menopause, dryness is very common and is covered on our menopause care page. Lubricants, moisturizers and other options may help, depending on the cause.

Vaginal Health: Common Questions

Short answers to questions patients often ask about vaginal symptoms.

What is the difference between bacterial vaginosis and a yeast infection?

Bacterial vaginosis is an imbalance of vaginal bacteria and often causes thin discharge with a fishy odor. A yeast infection is an overgrowth of yeast and often causes itching and thick, white discharge. They need different treatments.

Is vaginal odor always a sign of infection?

No. Some odor is normal and can change during your cycle. A new, strong or fishy odor, especially with other symptoms, should be checked.

Should I douche to keep the vagina clean?

No. The vagina cleans itself, and douching can disrupt its natural balance and increase the risk of infections. Gentle external washing is enough.

Can I bring up vaginal symptoms at a routine visit?

Yes. You can raise any vaginal or sexual health concern during a gynecology appointment.
